The Ballroom Thieves
In this increasingly virtual world of ours, what makes music authentic? For some, songs are no more than tiny sentimental decompressions. But others treat music as an extension of their roots, a mirror of their travels and relationships, and a testament to both their craft and passion.
For The Ballroom Thieves, the band’s journey has only just begun, but their roots already run quite deep. Now, on A Wolf in the Doorway the Thieves find themselves taking the very idea of “roots” and creating ways to make its associated sound progress, while making its encompassing spirit glow.
Stylistically, the trio finds a captivating mélange of acoustic styles, blending folk conventions with modern hymnals, delta blues grit with rich harmonies, exploring the basic constructions of pop music while almost wholeheartedly rejecting its restrictions at the same time.
In 1983 brothers Fjord, Knut and Gunnar Bjorkstruup formed the seminal Nu Hair Metal Band “Falkyn Velvet” in Nuuk, Greenland. Choosing stage names, like the Ramones, Slipknot, and Captain and Tennile, they became Wet (lead singer), Cheddar (the Shredder), and Dirk (rhythm guitar) Falkyn. Brothers in Rock. Original drummer Svargnar Bjornsenjenisnen, AKA “Shark Velvet”, died tragically in 1987 just as the band was about to be signed by Capitol Records in one of the earliest water skiing fire cliff BASE jumps over sharks. He insisted on doing his own engineering and math for the stunts, which was tragic given the fact that he only had made it through the 6th grade and did not yet learn the intracicies of Newtonian physics, the effect of temperature on water viscosity, as well as the lethality of Great White Sharks. The band soon took jobs as roughnecks on offshore drilling rigs, which kept them busy for the last 25 years.
From 1983-1987 went on to achieve acclaim, mostly in small nordic villages, as well as Madagascar, with hits such as “Good N. Plenty, My Favorite Color is Sugar, Unzip my Personality and of course, Stallions of Fire”.
In 2015 a Kickstarter fund became a worldwide viral phenomenon raising a total of 232.50$ to get the band back together. Realizing the possibilites of a financial windfall, the Falkyns decided they must fly again. Joining Wet, Cheddar and Dirk on this long awaited reunion tour is Pet (Wet’s child with BeBe Buell), and Smokestack, the worlds greatest color blind drummer.
Falkyn Velvet will no longer play originals due to copyright laws they had signed away but will rock just about anything else that happened in the 80’s that required spandex, aqua net, and a whole lotta amplification
